Position Description

The Office of Council Member Jamal Osman is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Policy Aide. This politically appointed position provides communications, constituent services, research, engagement, and outreach assistance to the Council Member.

Work Location
This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes tasks as required by the Council Member.
  • Manage special projects and events for the Council Member, including development of policy in the Council Member’s priority work areas.
  • Manage the office in the absence of the Council Member, including supervising the Council Office Associate, managing the workload and assisting the Council Office Associate with phones and mailings when necessary.
  • Conducts research for the Council Member on committee and ward issues. Analyzes data and prepares recommendations.
  • Effective and timely follow up on constituent inquiries with empathy and respect. Follow and stay on top of committee agendas and work plans.
  • Provide logistics and meeting support for the Council Member.
  • Represent Council Member at meetings in City Hall and in the ward. These meetings may involve working evenings and weekends.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with city staff, community members and stakeholders. Write with a consistent voice in multiple mediums, including newsletters, letters, reports, opinion pieces, memos and more.
  • Interface with other elected offices, community partners, business partners and constituents; serve from time to time as a representative from the ward office on a variety of topics.
  • Other duties as assigned with more responsibilities over time.
Working Conditions: Standard office setting with some work in the Ward. Some evening assignments may occur occasionally.

Special Note: Due to the nature of the position and the close work association with the Council Member, the selected applicant must demonstrate the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Any breach in confidentiality is grounds for immediate dismissal.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 2-3 years of experience in related job duties and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office Suite with advanced skill including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint.
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple important and sensitive projects/projects under tight deadlines.
