Hours: A general work week will be Monday - Friday from 12:30 pm to 9:30 pm (flexible); additional hours and/or days may be required due to business demands.

Summary

Nearly 1 million gallons of water drawn from the processing of Herr s®potatoes are pumped to the farm for spray irrigation weekly on the 1500-acre farm, which includes a cropping program of corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay.

The Herr Angus Farm works with such environmental agencies as the Environmental Protection Agency, Chester County Conservation District, and soil conservationists to ensure erosion control and improve stream, ground, and surface water quality.

This position is responsible for operating sewage treatment, sludge processing, and starch recovery equipment in wastewater treatment plants to produce clean effluent.

Incumbent in this position will need to be flexible to cover hours in different shifts when other department employees are on vacation/sick.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operation, maintenance and cleaning of all equipment necessary to cleanse processing wastewater. This equipment includes, but is not limited to
      • Centrifugal and progressive cavity pumps
      • Centrifuges
      • Starch recovery system
      • Blowers
      • Biological treatment systems
      • Chemical feed systems
      • Storage lagoons
  • Mixing chemicals.
  • Keep accurate entries on daily log sheets.
  • Perform simple water tests.
  • Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of waste.
  • Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and tests results to determine load requirements.
  • Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes.
  • Maintains log of operations and records meter and gauge readings.
  • Drive waste trucks to the Herr Angus Farm.
  • Follow all safety guidelines as described in the safety code of conduct. Attend and participate in all safety meetings and be committed to working safety.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Must have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Must have the ability to write simple correspondence. Must have the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Must have the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must have the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must possess a valid driver's license. Should hold a current forklift license or be willing to train and obtain a license within 90-days of hire.

Other Qualifications

Must be able to pass a job-related assessment with a score of 70% or better. Must possess a stable work history with good references.
