Job Summary

The Academic Support Engineer, Senior (ASE, Sr.) works directly with School of Engineering faculty as a technical mentor and advisor to undergraduate student teams engaged in Design Lab capstone projects. The ASE, Sr. also works with students in a hands-on capacity to help facilitate project success. This includes regular class sessions, as well as providing additional guidance during office hours outside of class. Responsibilities include leading students through a practical design process, helping students to identify customer requirements and appropriate technical resources, and providing student supervision in prototype design development while maintaining general class and laboratory organization. Additionally, the ASE, Sr. identifies potential project sponsors, secures sponsored projects with approval of the Director and acts as technical interface with project sponsors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in electrical, mechanical, computer systems, industrial, materials engineering or related fields
  • Five (5) years of design related industry experience
  • Applicants must meet stated minimum education and experience requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in electrical, mechanical, computer systems, industrial, materials engineering or related fields
  • Additional years of design related industry experience
  • Multidisciplinary engineering background
  • Experience in technical instruction in engineering or a related field

  • Demonstrated contemporary understanding of industry design methods including computational engineering tools in technical disciplines of electrical, computer systems, mechanical, industrial, and materials engineering
  • Excellent technical and professional communication skills
  • Ability to present technical information in a clear manner to students, faculty and sponsors
  • Skills and ability to learn operation of a variety of laboratory equipment
  • Ability to research, analyze, and interpret engineering and technical data
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to analyze, design and implement engineering systems
  • Ability to anticipate and solve engineering problems
  • Effective project and time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives

Job Duties

  • Mentor undergraduate student teams on Capstone design projects. Oversee all phases of design, analysis, build and test.
  • Guide student teams in interpreting customer requirements, and evaluating design feasibility and trade-offs. Coach students in project and time management, communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Assist student teams in identifying appropriate design, analysis, prototype, and test resources for Capstone projects. Review and approve technical drawings and purchase requisitions submitted by Capstone project teams.
  • Serve as technical interface with project sponsors to maintain sponsor satisfaction. Provide direction to students on effective sponsor communications which may include teleconferences, meetings and/or visits to sponsor facilities.
  • Provide technical and professional critique of student projects with specific, constructive guidance on actions for improvement. Provide the faculty mentor with feedback on student and team performance routinely, and as requested.
  • Develop new teaching materials and modules for Capstone design course as approved by Director. Maintain Design Lab teaching tools.
  • Identify and secure Capstone project opportunities as approved by Director that provide meaningful educational experiences for students. Lead meetings with potential sponsors to determine project feasibility and work-scope. Draft and submit approved project proposals for project sponsors, foundations and other funding sources.
  • Conduct frequent monitoring of student work areas and activity for compliance with Design Lab safety policies and protocols, and to ensure a safe, organized work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Pay: $50,519.02 - $65,000.00 per year
