Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking and Accounting Specialist for Student Accounting, Billing and Cashier Services within the University Controller’s Office. Reporting to the Senior Accountant, this position is responsible for the monthly reconciliation of Student Accounts Receivable subledger to the University’s General Ledger and Third Party Subsidiary Ledger Systems to the General Ledger in accordance with University policies and procedures.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Responsible for monthly reconciliations from both Student Information systems currently in place at Rutgers University; Integrated Management System (IMS) and Banner for Rutgers Biomedical Health and Sciences.
- Oversees several accounts categorized as high risk by the University with large daily dollar activity.
- Ensures proper recording of revenues and expenses including proper accountability over students’ tuition, fees, refunds and loan funds, analyze students’ accounts and data of various funds and programs.
- Develops and prepares independent analysis of the Student Accounts Receivables and Collections Portfolio for the Manager, Senior Business Manager and Associate Controller identifies issues consistent with a broad understanding utilizing multiple data systems.
- Processes cash journals, journal entries, wire transfers, check requests and ACH check requests. Performs professional level work requiring knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Practices (GAAP).
- Provides assistance on various projects and processes that requires broad knowledge of SAR systems and the application and use of concepts, theories, and terminology of the organization.
- Works under general supervision, carries out routine and non-routine tasks within established work parameters for the unit with limited review of work outputs by supervisor.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, statistics, business administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
- A minimum of two years relevant experience in a financial/accounting function or related field.

- Professional knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and practices (GAAP) and a good understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, terminology.
- Strong analytical, reconciliation and problem solving skills,
- Proficience in MS Office suite of products.

- Experience working in or with higher education institutions.
- Experience in student accounts receivable and payable.
- Experience with university system such as IMS, Oracle, Tableau, Nelnet and ECSI.
