ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The School-Based Behavioral Health Associate provides (1) early intervention therapy and counseling services to students (2) case management and mental health support services in school for all students and at-risk students, (3) consultation services to school personnel, liaison support to community agencies, training programs for school and community populations, and (4) support the primary care provider(s) and behavioral health consultant(s).
- Identify students in need of trauma support and provide prevention, screening, referral, and treatment services to students.
- Provide case management for students and families requiring multiple services.
- Provide quality trauma support and behavioral health care services.
- Provide trauma-informed interventions (group, individual, and/or family) for at-risk students.
- Provide mentoring and other intervention models to children and their families who have experienced trauma or are at risk of experiencing trauma, including those who are low-income, homeless, in foster care, involved in the criminal justice system, unemployed, experiencing a mental illness or substance abuse disorder or not enrolled in at risk of dropping out of an educational institution.
- Collaborate with school-employed mental health professionals and other community partners in the multi-tiered system of supports to develop treatment plans that ensure appropriate services provided with minimal disruption to school day.
- Identify specific behavioral treatment goals for each student served (e.g. improved attendance, classroom behavior, academic performance, etc.), and integrate services with student’s education and school’s culture/climate.
- Provide preventive and awareness-based education (via classes/presentation) to students, caregivers, and school staff.
- Provide mental health resources to the school community.
- Liaison to/for community resources; next steps involving short-term brief intervention.
- Provide small group counseling (e.g., anger/stress management, self-esteem, grief, relationships, peer bullying, parental separation, sexuality and gender, etc.).
- Address risky behaviors (substance abuse including nicotine vaping, alcohol, & other drugs, reproductive health and sexual relationships, etc.), general mental health and crisis intervention, and other social determinants of health.
- Maintain and track documentation of mental health support for students.
- Assisting with obtaining consents to treatment for students wishing to access our primary care provider and behavioral health consultant.
- Ability to develop audience appropriate programming in response to identified needs
- Provide services to school personnel:
- Deliver school staff trainings with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting students’ performance and behavior.
- Align school staff trainings to support school’s benchmarks for Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support (PBIS), “Restorative Practices”, and “School Improvement Plan”.
- Support school staff trainings on trauma-informed approaches to education to develop safe, stable, and nurturing learning environments that prevent and mitigate the effects of trauma.
- Assist school staff (including administrators, teachers, nurse, resource officer, hallway monitors, etc.) with behavior management strategies.
- Support in developing referral process for school-based behavioral health services and provide education for school personnel on appropriate referrals.
- Provide services to parents/families:
- Provide caregiver workshops to increase awareness on youth mental health.
- Work with parents to facilitate their support in their children’s school adjustment.
- Assist parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources including our school based health center.
- Attends and actively participates in both internal and external meetings as required.
- Attend trainings and conferences as determined by supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned and related to the position.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Licensed Social Worker or equivalent – may be working towards clinical hour requirements
- Excellent communication skills including effective and relevant trainings
- Excellent relationship building skills including liaison relationships with caregivers, school staff, and other agencies
- Ability to work effectively on a multidisciplinary team including collaborating with other system-of-care partners
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to support individuals of all backgrounds
- Ability to display critical thinking and exercise individual judgement and discretion in matters of significance
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public
- Ability to be organized and work efficiently with strong attention to detail within a demanding work environment while prioritizing tasks
- Knowledge of computer software applications (Microsoft Office Applications, others)
- Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation as it relates to correspondence necessary to perform essential job functions
- Ability to work in, and respond appropriately to a demanding environment including crisis situations
- Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information
- Ability to communicate well and in a caring and supportive manner with individuals of all backgrounds.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, volunteers, and the public
- Ability to adhere to all Family First Health’s policies, processes, and procedures, especially, Code of Conduct, Workplace Conduct, and the Remote/Telework Policy if indicated eligible to work remotely or telework.
- Ability to articulate and advocate Family First Health’s mission and values.
- Ability to maintain required clearances and licensure.

Mental/Physical Requirements: Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with a Recovery Specialist position such as:
- Frequent and prolonged work at a computer and/or on the phone for extended periods of time with repetitive typing with arm and hand motion
- Requires correct vision and hearing to normal range
- Occasional bending, stooping, crouching, or kneeling
- Frequent standing, walking, turning, and reaching
- Frequent contact with patients, clients, vendors, and visitors
- Occasional carrying of office supplies and lite equipment
- Frequent competing demands, frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events
