The Data Analyst I performs technical and professional work in support of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA) in both operations and functions, providing the Vice Provost with data for informed decision making through comprehensive data analysis and reporting, with training by and in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Research. This position develops and maintains internal publications; designs, formats and compiles data required for development and production of specialty reports; and formulates responses to general data requests from internal and external stakeholders.
This is a full-time position in a highly visible, central administrative office, which offers Rice’s generous benefits and pay in the range of $78,000 - $80,000 annually.
The ideal candidate will have an insatiable curiosity and eagerness to learn; be patient, methodical, detail-oriented, and comfortable pivoting based on emerging needs; possess strong logical and quantitative skills, with the ability to grasp the academic context behind the data; and display excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Two years of related experience
- In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Access and Excel), business intelligence software such as Tableau, and statistical software such as SPSS, SAS and / or R
- Proven quantitative and qualitative research skills
- Work under limited supervision and follow through on assignments
- Collaborate and be effective working with diverse populations and with all constituencies of Rice
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Exhibit organizational skills and be detail oriented
- Think critically and creatively, have a high standard of integrity, and be motivated to incorporate best practices into the organizational culture
- The ability to collect, organize, analyze, interpret, identify relevant trends and present information in a meaningful manner using large, datasets and databases
- Present a wide-range of data visually for diverse audiences
Essential Functions
- Under limited supervision designs, formats and compiles data required for development and production of specialty reports and projects
- Identifies and compiles data and completes survey submission request from various external entities
- Develops and maintains assigned internal publications
- Uses software to produce aggregate data for dissemination
- Creates numeric and graphic displays for succinct and meaningful consumption
- Prepares regular status reports
- Participates in regional and state forums and professional institutional research organizations
- Assists in updating and maintaining the VPAA website
- Interprets data, identifies relevant trends, and recommends aligned actions
- Effectively communicates research findings and other information in written and spoken word and graphic or tabular displays
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
- Builds and provides support for university KPI management and builds university intelligence dashboards
- Collaborates with administrators and non-technical stakeholders across the university
- Implements and enforces processes and tools that will maintain understanding, integrity, and accuracy of data
- Identifies and executes automation opportunities for process improvement in order to advance university efficiency goals
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field
- An interest in working in academia with data
- Familiarity with academic cloud tools such as Interfolio, InfoReady, and Pivot
- Experience building APIs to connect data sources to cloud tool and dashboards
- Knowledge or strong interest/background in Oracle ERP Cloud (known as “iO” within Rice)
- ETL development experience using high-level programming language and associated technologies such as Python, PHP, Ruby on Rails, HTML, JavaScript, JSON, XML, GraphQL
- Familiarity with mobile apps and digital platforms
