ES’s work covers a broad array of economic issues, including the labor market, regulation, health policy, and fiscal and monetary policy. ES scholars influence key economic policies by conducting rigorous and relevant research and then disseminating and communicating their findings to the policy community and to the broader public.

Position Location
: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.

The Development Operations Manager plays a critical role in the operations of the development department and contributes to the growth in revenue from all sources of support. A key partner to the Senior Director of Development (SDD), the Director of Development, Foundations (DDF), and the broader Economic Studies (ES) operations team in meeting the program’s fundraising goals, with attention to corporate donors and database management and internal gift processing and gift agreement procedures. Responsibilities include timely and accurate entry of fundraising data into Raiser’s Edge, administrative and fundraising support to include invoicing, tracking proposal review, managing grant agreement approval, tracking reporting requirements, scheduling meetings, coordinating event logistics and travel. The Development Operations Manager will manage multiple assignments, manage systems, take initiative to learn new skills and problem solve, and will understand and anticipate team needs. This position project manages and implements activities related to the identification, qualification, recruitment, and solicitation for new corporate donors (Economic Studies Council members), and the stewardship and renewal process for current donors and ESC members. The position will work closely with colleagues throughout Brookings, including the VP for Economic Studies, Brookings’ central development, scholars, general counsel, and finance offices.

Support for Fundraising Activity (50%)
  • Working with the SDD and DDF to support all proposal and renewal strategies for Economic Studies Council. Responsible for maintaining calendar for solicitations and stewardship activity.
  • Implements proposal and renewal process for ESC; responsible for timely submissions and follow up (pledge reminders and invoices).
  • Drafts briefings for stewardship events and run of show for larger events for SDD, DDF, VP and scholars.
  • Updates ES development-related materials on an annual basis to focus on greatest needs and goals.
  • Manages ESC events (in-person and virtual) including scheduling and confirming speakers, reserving rooms, managing remote access to meetings, catering, monitoring invitation lists, managing other logistics and meeting participant support, follow up to thank participants.
  • Schedules, monitors, and manages meeting requests from donors and prospects.

Data and Information (40%)
  • Manages, inputs, and tracks all fundraising data into Institution-wide Raisers Edge database and serves as the team’s expert in the functions and opportunities in Raisers Edge.
  • Establishes and maintains tracking systems for prospects by both revenue source (foundations, individuals, and corporations) and program areas. Inputs data and maintains all development files in SharePoint.
  • Coordinates with Central Development on prospect research to identify potential new corporate, individual and foundation donor prospects.
  • Maintains daily records throughout opportunity lifecycles by inputting donor prospects, grant opportunities, calendar milestones, contacts, and funder lists.
  • Generates relevant reports from Raisers Edge for Dev and Finance meetings
  • Maintains donor lists for research portfolios, program initiatives, and Economic Studies Council.

Administrative Management (10%)
  • Participates in weekly Central Dev, Economic Studies Dev, and other staff/scholar meetings, and distributes agenda items as required.
  • Assists the SDD and DDF with the preparation of corporation and individual briefings for funder and prospect meetings.
  • Working with DDF, scholars, and finance staff, directs the production of grant reports. Works with scholars and finance team to track deliverables and manage grant modifications or special reporting needs.
  • Initiates and oversees the routing of all proposals and gift agreements for internal approvals.
  • Schedules development-related appointments, meetings, and conference calls for the Dev team.
  • Assists DDF with additional materials required for foundation submissions (board lists, tax documents, etc.)
  • Coordinates travel logistics (including air, train, hotel, ground transport); prepares travel expense forms; manages internal reporting for P-card transactions.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree preferred. A minimum of five years of professional administrative work experience in a large, fast-paced, challenging work environment required; demonstrated experience and increasing responsibility in a development operations role. Strong project manager capable of driving multiple work streams toward deadlines and juggling changing priorities. Highly relational and understand how to build trust with both internal and external stakeholders across and outside the organization. An effective communicator, able to craft clear, concise and compelling written communications. Meticulous attention to detail in all communications. Grace under pressure, and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment. Proven ability to work with senior level executives, both internal and external. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Microsoft Outlook (to include the calendar feature), Word, Excel and PowerPoint proficiency required, Raisers Edge experience preferred. Excellent organizational and project management skills with high level of attention to detail and follow-up. Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to interact with all levels of internal and external stakeholders. Must be proactive and demonstrate a high degree of professionalism. Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information. Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
