Job Summary
The Biology Department at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA is searching for an engaging, equity-minded teacher-scholar to join our teaching-centered Biology Department for a one-year, fixed-term, non-tenure-track faculty position for the 2023-2024 academic year. We are looking for colleague who is committed to pursuing excellence in teaching by creating engaging, inclusive learning environments for undergraduate students in microbiology. Teaching obligations include lecture and laboratory sections of our introductory-level Microbiology course, which serves our nursing students and others interested in post-baccalaureate health care professional schools. Total teaching load will be 12 contact hours each semester. Ideal candidates will have experience teaching undergraduates from a variety of backgrounds and identities, including those historically marginalized in the sciences (e.g., first-generation students, students from low-income families, students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities).
The department will provide support for developing engaging, inclusive, interactive courses that meet our learning objectives. The laboratory portion of the course has an established curriculum and staff support for acquiring and distributing supplies to students. In addition, Gonzaga’s Center for Teaching and Advising provides regular faculty development and education opportunities, including an optional year-long orientation for new faculty (including lecturers).

Essential Functions
  • Teach 12 contact hours of courses per semester (8 credit hours—two lecture sections and two lab sections.) Teaching responsibilities include lower-division microbiology with lab.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master’s or Ph.D. in Biology or another relevant discipline
  • At least one year of experience teaching undergraduate students in relevant courses


Desired Qualifications
  • Evidence of engaging, inclusive teaching at the undergraduate level that includes designing and teaching both lecture and laboratory courses.
  • Evidence of effectiveness in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and identities, including those historically underrepresented in the sciences
