Medical Secretary/ ED Scribes
United Health Services is seeking a Medical Secretary/Emergency Room Scribe to join our Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, NY. The Medical Secretary/ED Scribe will perform secretarial duties using specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. Duties will include scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence. This is a benefits-eligible position.

Medical Secretary/ ED Scribes Overview
The ED Scribe works to facilitate patient flow through the Emergency Department, ensuring accurate and complete medical records for each patient. Assists the physician by accompanying him/her during the medical history and exam, recording details on the electronic medical record, EPIC, and coordinating department resources regarding tests, orders, radiology and results. Track orders for each patient, looks up previous records, and notifies physician of the results.
In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately.
Key Responsibilities and Expectations
Accompanies physician to the bedside and documents patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) such as present illness, history, notations from physical exam, procedures performed, test results and discharge plan. Ensures physician electronically signs the EMR before the patient and scribe leave the patient care area.
Receives training from Billing/Coding, as needed, and works to ensure accurate and complete medical records, which improve charge capture.
Looks up pertinent past medical records.
Prompts physician to review laboratory and radiology results as soon as they are available.
Informs physician of test delays.
Troubleshoots causes and solutions when physician orders are not completed in a timely fashion or results are incomplete.
Places and answers calls for the physician, with the exception of taking medical data such as radiology reports and lab values over the phone.
Assists in the disposition of the patient, including entry of discharge instructions.
Adheres to outlined scope of the job and refrains from activities that are prohibited for ED Scribes such as entering physician orders, writing prescriptions, engaging in direct patient care, bringing food/water, giving medical advice/communicating medical information, administering medication, or relaying verbal commands between physician and nurse.
Position Qualifications
Minimum:
High School Graduate or equivalent
Experience with Medical Terminology in a Medical Setting
Preferred:
Previous experience in a clinical setting requiring
Experience with Basic Human Anatomy, Charting Basics and Coding Guidelines
