School-Based Mentor Job Description

Grant Funded Position, 2023-2024


Program Purpose:

  • To provide ongoing support to:
    • Teachers new to teaching (TNT),
    • Teachers new to Berkeley County Schools (TNBC),
    • Student Teachers not completing their cooperative assignment in the traditional manner,
    • Teacher in Residence, and
    • Permanent substitutes who are new to a position, programmatic level, or grade level. Permanent substitutes who have had three consecutive years of satisfactory evaluations may be exempt.
  • To grow teacher capacity through ongoing support and professional development at all grade levels and subject areas.

School-based Mentors:

  • Purpose: To provide on-site support to teachers new to the school.
  • Reports to: Principal and/or assistant principal
  • Terms of service: One year
  • Stipend: $800 per year
  • Required qualifications:
    • WV Professional Teaching Certificate
    • Minimum of three years of experience
    • Successful evaluations for last three years of employment
    • Currently working for Berkeley County Schools
    • Demonstrate the following competencies:
      • A high degree of pedagogy
      • A strong understanding of core content standards
      • A strong understanding of formative and summative assessment
      • The ability to use effective instructional strategies to augment the delivery of instruction
      • The ability to integrate technology into the delivery of instruction
      • The ability to motivate people
      • The ability to be a team player
      • An interest in assisting teachers new to the profession and new to the school
    • Responsibilities:
      • Be the school-based mentor for mentee(s) within the home school.
      • Attend Foundations of Mentoring training as scheduled by county.
      • Attend refresher mentoring training every three years.
      • Be available to new teachers prior to school starting, including attending designated portions of New Teacher Orientation.
      • Meet with each mentee for a minimum of once a week; these meetings can go to two once every two weeks during the second semester at the discretion of the administration.
      • Collaborate with administration and AIM for additional, and in-depth support for the mentees.
      • Maintain a Meeting Log (provided) and submit at end of each semester to AIM and school administration.
      • Attend monthly support meetings with AIMs and other school-based mentors in programmatic levels (elementary, secondary, special education)
      • Participate in assigned professional development sessions to keep abreast of county initiatives.
      • Complete and submit documentation to AIMs as scheduled.
      • Communicate openly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
      • Maintain confidentiality and function in a professional manner at all times.
      • Assist mentee in a support role rather than an evaluative role.
      • Must be available for commitments beyond the instructional day when necessary.
