Description
The Kentucky Innocence Project ("KIP") was developed by the Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) to provide incarcerated men and women who have legitimate claims of innocence with a resource through which their claims may be investigated and presented to the courts of the Commonwealth for relief. KIP serves the entire state by not only addressing each case of wrongful conviction but also addressing much broader concerns in the criminal justice system.
DPA is one of the few state agencies that has an internally located innocence project whose program is integrated into the public defender program. KIP is part of the national innocence network. KIP is hiring a Paralegal to assist in reviewing and investigating claims of innocence made by incarcerated Kentuckians. KIP looks for individuals who have demonstrated a desire to help the poorest and often the most vulnerable in their communities. The ideal candidate has superior legal research and writing skills, and also exhibits exceptional planning / organizational skills, is self-directed and also comfortable working with their defense team which includes attorneys, other investigators, paralegals and office administrative legal staff. - The position will be located in Frankfort and will report to the KIP Supervisor.
- Substantial travel is required.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in paralegal science or a bachelor's degree with a minor in paralegal studies OR two-year program in paralegal studies OR post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies OR a Juris Doctorate or a law degree from a college of law.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience as a paralegal or legal secretary will substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.

Working Conditions
Incumbents working in this job title primarily perform duties in an office setting. Travel is required.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
