Position Description

Reporting to the Director of the Office of Learning Resources and Support in the Program of Medical Education at Harvard Medical School, the Learning Specialist will be responsible for the educational evaluations of struggling medical students during all phases of the medical education curriculum. Based on the educational evaluations, the incumbent will also develop remediation plans, coach on executive function skills, determine appropriate knowledge content support and assist with preparing for medical licensing examinations, shelf examinations, Step 1 examinations, and Step 2 examinations.

Specific responsibilities will include:
  • The development of core academic skills such as strategic reading, effective study strategies, and exam preparation;
  • coaching/training medical students on executive function skills such as time management, attention/concentration, personal accountability, and motivation;
  • and meeting one-on-one with students whose individual academic challenges are better addressed outside group instructional setting to assist students in developing academic plans and setting goals.
The Learning Specialist will also work collaboratively with the Director of Disability Services, Society Advisors, teaching faculty, Offices of Student Affairs and Recruitment, and Multi-Cultural Affairs to address not only the academic needs, but emotional needs of the students. The incumbent will maintain records, provide reports and perform other activities and duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Masters in Education strongly preferred
  • 4+ years of experience at the college level and above
  • 3+ years of experience with medical and dental students preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent materials development and project management skills

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting using near vision use for reading and computer use for extended periods of time
  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office setting
  • May be required to work nights and weekends

Additional Information

Please also note this is a part-time, 21 hours (.6 FTE) per week position.

This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
