DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Performs routine cleaning and semiskilled maintenance tasks. This is routine manual work calling for the efficient and economical performance of building cleaning and maintenance tasks. These tasks are performed in accordance with well established procedures and are assigned under the general supervision of the Head Custodian. A Custodian may assign and direct the work of cleaners and per diem workers. Does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)

• Assists in routine floor maintenance (sweeping, mopping, waxing, etc.);
• High and low dusts woodwork, furniture, equipment and other articles;
• Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks and other fixtures;
• Empties waste baskets and disposes of rubbish;
• Clears snow and ice from walkways;
• Cuts grass, trims shrubbery, rakes leaves and generally maintains grounds;
• Operates low pressure boiler;
• Checks gauges of boiler for proper pressure;
• Checks safety valves and water pressure valves of boiler;
• Cleans oil filters, nozzles, and electric eye of boiler;
• Flushes boiler down;
• Cleans fire tube or water tube boiler,
• Paints rooms and equipment and assists in minor building repairs.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of steam boiler equipment; ability to make semi-skilled mechanical repairs; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; willingness to perform janitorial tasks; thoroughness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Graduation from High School or possession of an equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; PLUS One year of experience in building cleaning and maintenance work, or as a carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, or steam boiler fireman.
