About the Department
The primary function of the Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department is to provide educational programs leading to BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering.
Essential Job Duties
The Research Associate will report to Dr. Richard Kim and will be responsible for laboratory and field investigation of geosynthetic reinforced asphalt concrete, including:
- Four-point notched bending beam fatigue test with Digital Image Correlation technique
- Interface shear strength test on field cores
- Performance evaluation of different geosynthetic products using pavement condition data in the NCDOT PMS database
- Oversight of FWD testing and coring of field sections
- Development of selection guidelines for geosynthetic products and tack coat materials
In addition, the Research Associate will be responsible for training and supervising graduate students on various test protocols used in the project. The Research Associate is also expected to provide assistance in the preparation of research proposals and to publish articles in peer-reviewed journals resulting from his/her research.
Other Responsibilities
Maintenance of laboratory equipment items that are used for testing geosynthetic-reinforced asphalt concrete and tack coat materials.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
- Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related field and a minimum of two years of experience with geosynthetic interlayer systems and tack coat materials for asphalt pavements.
