Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Health or a related field and three years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in that field and two years of such experience; OR a Doctorate in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications :
A graduate degree in epidemiology or biostatistics is preferred. Experience in birth defects surveillance and research. Experience with birth defects registry, healthcare encounter data (SPARCS, Medicaid), and Vital Records data. Familiarity with ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and BPA coding systems. Proficiency with MS Access databases and strong SAS programming skills for data management and analysis. Experience linking large public health and administrative data sets. Experience with multivariable analyses, evaluating and interpreting scientific data. Experience with manuscript, poster, and slide preparation for publication and presentation.
Responsibilities :
The Research Scientist II will work within the Birth Defects Lifespan Studies Section in the Bureau of Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology, Center for Environmental Health. The incumbent will be a part of a team of multidisciplinary public health professionals across seven U.S. sites to develop a standardized surveillance database of individuals living with birth defects. The incumbent will manage, clean, standardize, link, and evaluate birth defects registry, healthcare encounter, specialty clinic, and vital records data using SAS. The incumbent will document each data set and the data management and linkage processes and will participate with other site data managers in data quality and consistency checks within and across sites. The incumbent will perform literature searches, develop research questions and analysis plans, analyze data, interpret results, and collaborate with senior staff to generate scientific manuscripts, reports, posters, and presentations.
