Position Description

Professor Aris Alexandradinata in the Physics Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Research Scientist in the Santa Cruz Materials Center.

The quantum condensed matter theory group in the Materials Center is represented by Professors Aris Alexandradinata, Joshua Deutsch, Onuttom Narayan, Sriram Shastry and Sergey Syzranov, with strengths in topological quantum and strongly correlated matter, disordered systems, and mesoscopic physics. The experimental groups are led by Professors David Lederman, Arthur Ramirez, Jairo Velasco and Aiming Yan, with strengths in geometrically frustrated spin and lower-dimensional quantum materials. The Materials Center is affiliated with the inter-departmental Materials Science and Engineering Initiative, which focuses on discovery of materials and their integration into devices for sustainable technologies.

Under the direction of Professor Alexandradinata, the research scientist will work on projects at the intersection of topological materials and photovoltaics and will be able to initiate independent research projects in the general focus areas of the Santa Cruz Materials Center.

The scientist should have strong organizational, technical, and interpersonal skills and will be expected to carry out theoretical analyses, collaborate with a diverse team of faculty and students, present research results at relevant workshops and conferences, assist with applications for grant proposals, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

Applicants with six years experience as a postdoctoral scholar in quantum condensed matter theory are encouraged to apply; the ideal candidate would have two years of postdoctoral scholar experience in topological materials and four years of postdoctoral scholar experience in photovoltaics. Candidates without this ideal balance of experience will still be considered for the position.
