Department Summary:

The Office of Sponsored Programs Administration & Research Compliance (SPARC) provides Drake University's faculty, staff and students with comprehensive guidance and support in their pursuit and conduct of research and scholarly activities.

SPARC works collaboratively with the research community to assist them in advancing Drake's mission of teaching, research and scholarship and provides them with the highest quality customer service and technical expertise.

SPARC provides assistance in five primary areas: Pre-Award, Post-Award, Research Compliance, Technology Transfer, and Training.

Job Summary:

The Senior Grants Specialist will collaborate with all members of SPARC and partners across campus. They will assist in managing proposals, awards, and administrative actions.

The Senior Grants Specialist will consistently demonstrates an ability to independently manage work queue, honor deadlines and performance metric expectations, resolve common issues, and consistently demonstrates superior responsiveness and professionalism. The Senior Grants Specialist will assist Principal Investigators and sponsors with proposal preparation, budget development, etc.

The Senior Grants Specialist will possess signature authority to submit proposals on behalf of Drake University. This individual may also act as a point of contact with governmental regulatory and licensing agencies to ensure the university’s compliance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience working with foundations and/or with federal granting agencies
  • Experience working in higher education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Possesses a high level of knowledge of institutional policies and procedures pertaining to external funding, finance and administration
  • Possesses the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with university personnel, state and federal agencies and private organizations while dealing with complex matters
  • Possesses the ability to communicate effectively, both orally in in writing, directly with PIs and other Drake personnel about a limited array of research administration topics
  • Works under varying levels of supervision in a deadline-oriented environment

Job Duties:

55% - Assists faculty and staff in all aspects of proposal development: program development, evaluation plans, writing, preparing budgets, completing standard forms and certifications, reviewing proposals for compliance, and uploading proposal documents to online portals. - (Essential)

15% - Aids faculty and staff in finding funding. - (Essential)

5% - Learns and monitors faculty research interests, initiating meetings, trainings on funding searches (infoed) and proposing new funding opportunities. - (Essential)

5% - Monitors key sources of grant funding opportunities including online publications and databases. Obtains and interprets grant guidelines and needs as determined by agency program announcements. - (Essential)

5% - Reviews proposals for University, federal and/or state compliance issues and/or sensitivity concerns and recommends appropriate actions to the SPARC Director. Approves proposals for submission in Director’s absence. - (Essential)

5% - Develops and conducts workshops, presentations and trainings on preaward-related issues. - (Essential)

5% - Assists Director in the development of procedures and policies to ensure office efficiency and compliance. Staffs the IRB. - (Essential)

5% - Performs other duties as assigned. - (Essential)

For faculty positions, selection will depend on the receipt of recommendation confirming the candidate's scholarly achievements and teaching abilities and/or on the candidate's satisfactory passing of a teaching demonstration if selected for an on-campus interview. For staff positions, selection will depend upon careful review of each applicant’s references, education, and, if applicable, experience.
