Position Summary & Responsibilities:

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is accepting applicants to fill two Attorney positions responsible for charging and prosecuting criminal cases brought to the United States Attorney’s Office-District of Kansas, with a primary emphasis on illicit drug trafficking and associated crimes. One position is in Kansas City; the other position is in Wichita. The positions will be designated as Special Assistant Attorney General/Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAAG/SAUSA).

The Attorney must be able to carefully evaluate evidence; provide direction and feedback to investigators; charge and present cases to a grand jury; prepare persuasive motions and responses that are well-written and well-grounded in Federal and State statutory and case law; confidently present evidence and argument at pre-trial hearings; and represent the government at trial and at post-conviction hearings. The successful candidate for the Attorney position must have exceptional ethical standards, be self-motivated, be well organized, exercise good judgment, and be a team player.


Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Draft charging documents
  • Draft and argue pretrial motions and responses; prepare pleadings
  • Perform legal research and writing
  • Interview witnesses and conduct plea negotiations
  • Participate in trials, with and without a jury, and make compelling and persuasive arguments
  • Research, interpret, and apply statutes, court decisions, or other authority on points of law
  • Brief and argue criminal appeals (if interested)

Qualifications:

Education

  • Juris Doctorate attained from an accredited law school

Licensing & Certification

  • Certificate of admission and membership in good standing with the Bar of the Supreme Court of Kansas and licensed in the United States District Court for the District of Kansas
  • Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State of Kansas

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to carefully and thoroughly research and reach sound conclusions on complex legal issues
  • Ability to accurately and persuasively communicate complex information, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple demanding projects and deadlines at the same time
  • Ability to charge and argue criminal cases brought to resolution in both State and Federal Courts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prosecution experience in charging and presenting felony cases
  • Two-plus years of practicing law and handling complex legal matters
