Description:
Supports the production of kalo and other crops grown in the lo`i or wetland system. Responsibilities include the management of existing kalo cultivation areas, restoring former growing areas, and maintaining general landscape of the broader area. The objective of this position is to both produce kalo for the market, as well as to improve cultural, agricultural, and educational viability of ‘aina here at Kualoa Ranch. Performs kalo farming tasks including mounding mud, fertilizing, planting huli, harvesting and processing kalo for sale. Performs lo’i maintenance to include ensuring waterflow is appropriate for healthy oxygenation of plants, removal of invasive snails and their eggs, and weeding of grasses and other broad-leaves. Conducts general landscaping of the area.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience with use, maintenance, and safety of hand and power tools required. Able to conduct strenuous fieldwork in weather extremes, which may involve extensive walking or hiking in undeveloped areas. Activities include physical labor in rough terrain and carrying loads up to 50 pounds. Ability to properly identify species of flora in a field setting with a focus on native crop plants preferred. 1 year of agricultural experience and knowledge of traditional Hawaiian farming systems preferred. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and language, sustainability and environment awareness preferred. Basic interpersonal communications skills required.
