Job Summary
The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks candidates for an Inpatient Veterinary Technician to work directly with the ER clinicians and rotating intern doctors to help facilitate quality client care and patient flow through the IMC, ICU, and ER.

This is a monthly rotating late swing shift position.
Mon – Thurs 4:00 pm – 2:00 am; Fri – Sun 3:00 pm – 4:00 am

Essential Functions
  • Oversight and training of professional veterinary students regarding care of animals, collection of specimens, and handling of animals.
  • Transportation and monitoring of patients requiring diagnostic imaging and assistance with obtaining images as needed.
  • Assisting clinicians with student examination, treatment, procedures, restraint, and sample collection.
  • Anesthetic monitoring for patients requiring minor procedures in IMC or ICU.
  • Assisting in emergency triage and stabilization of patients through the ER.
  • Assist clinicians with set-up of critical patients as needed, including ventilator and CRRT patients.
  • Communicating with referring veterinarians as directed by ECC clinicians.
  • Operation and monitoring of patients receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
  • Facilitating/coordinating consults with other specialty services.
  • Assisting with estimates, inputting charges, and/or similar tasks.
  • Other responsibilities as directed by clinicians.


  • This position will not be responsible for primary nursing care of ECC patients admitted to IMC or ICU. May be responsible for training, assisting or assigning tasks to others. May provide input to performance reviews of other employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Level I: Associate’s degree in a technical or scientific field related to the area of assignment.

Level II: Associate’s degree in a technical or scientific field related to the area of assignment plus 2 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.

Level III : Associate’s degree in a technical or scientific field related to the area of assignment plus 4 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital environment.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Certification or Licensure Requirements:
Veterinary Technician Certification having passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).
