POSITION SUMMARY:
In the Kansas City metro, over 10,000 immigrants are eligible for Citizenship. This position will work with legal permanent residents who are generally approaching 5 years in the country or more and eager to learn the English, literacy, and civics knowledge they will need to pass the Citizenship interview. The Citizenship Program Coordinator manages staff and volunteers who teach a variety of preparation courses at Catholic Charities, libraries, and community centers, and grows the program through community partnerships. This position successfully promotes and supports the mission of Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas as guided by the Catholic Social Teachings through promoting and establishing a Citizenship preparation program for eligible refugees and immigrants. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide overall coordination of Citizenship programming.
- Supervise part-time Citizenship instructor, AmeriCorps/VISTA members and volunteers to meet grant goals. Provide a minimum of one hour of supervision with each direct report on a monthly basis.
- Teach and facilitate multiple citizenship classes a week, both on-site and off-site. Use and improve upon established curriculum.
- Recruit program participants from refugee and immigrant communities utilizing an established network of community partnerships and referrals from other Catholic Charities programs.
- Create and manage relevant community partnerships
- Oversee and approve agency monthly reports, USCIS grant narrative and outcome reporting on time, correctly.
- Communicate with staff attorney regarding enrolled students and track naturalization outcome.
- Oversee initial intake and assessment for each student.
- Keep detailed attendance records and complete assessment to chart growth of the program.
- Ensure grant compliance by reviewing new grant documents, implementing necessary changes, training staff/volunteers and enforcing grant guidelines and procedures
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrate a passion for the mission of Catholic Charities

- Must complete VIRTUS training, background screening, drug testing, and any ongoing training as required
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field, at least 1 year experience teaching English language learners. TESOL or equivalent certification required, experience with citizenship instruction a plus.
- Enthusiasm and passion to prepare refugees and immigrants to pass the naturalization interview and become US citizens
- Experience with volunteer management preferred
- Ability to work effectively in an environment that is very diverse
- Must possess a valid Driver’s license, dependable transportation, current vehicle insurance and a verified safe driving record.
- Must be able to work independently from general instructions
- Must have competent organizational skills, attention to detail orientation and the ability to maintain confidentiality
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends depending on the set class schedule.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, standing, bending and moving
- Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds
- May be exposed to infectious diseases
- Must have physical ability to effectively communicate with others
- Must have the physical ability and appropriate licensure for driving
