MTD is looking for a new Facility Worker. The Facility Worker performs routine cleaning and maintenance of all bus stop shelters and bus stops, District offices, work areas, and public areas. This is a full-time position, Monday - Friday, 8AM - 4:30PM, with excellent benefits, including health insurance and a state pension.

Education Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of one year of experience in maintenance and repair is required.
  • Some related experience and/or training in cleaning methods and procedures is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of hand and power tools.
  • Must hold a valid State of Illinois Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize shelters and perform routine deep cleaning.
  • Install and maintain maps, schedule boards, shelter lighting, shelter glass and brackets, bus stop sign posts, and bus stop signs.
  • Repair vandalism and remove graffiti from shelters.
  • Complete all trash removal including picking up trash in and near the shelters and dumping trash receptacles at the shelters as needed.
  • Assist in assembling and dismantling bus shelters.
  • Clean, sweep, dust mop, and wet mop floors, stairways, corridors, and building entryways to ensure cleanliness of approximately 20,000 square feet.
  • Wash the inside and outside of windows.
  • Paints interior and exterior surfaces using a brush, roller, and ladders.
  • Check security systems of buildings and ensure all windows and doors are locked.
  • Conduct basic landscaping and lawn care, including snow removal for all MTD properties and bus shelters.
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance inspections and assist in small repairs to all MTD facilities.
  • Perform routine maintenance of custodial equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as scrubbing machines, high speed buffers, carpet shampooer, wet and dry vacuum, gas-powered post driver, trailer-mounted pressure washer, truck-mounted snowplow, and snowblowers.
  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations, including the use of proper chemicals and equipment necessary for specific tasks.
  • Assist Advanced Facility Workers and Facility Custodians as needed with various tasks.

Work Hours

  • General work hours: Monday - Friday, from 8:00AM - 4:30PM
  • Work shifts vary from day to night, as needed. MTD operates seven days a week, including weekends and holidays, and this position may require some work outside of traditional business hours.

Physical Demands

Position functions in indoor and outdoor settings, including a maintenance / bus garage and various office buildings. This position primarily services the bus stops and shelters. The Employee can expect to spend the majority of their shift outdoors. Employee must be able to use a variety of equipment and tools for up to 8 hours per day, up to 5 days per week. Physical requirements include stooping, kneeling, bending, standing, squatting/crouching, crawling/kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing and descending ladders and stairs, reaching above shoulders, and lifting and transporting heavy objects such as equipment. Position requires ability to talk and hear; use vision to read printed materials and make repairs; arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate tools and access information.

This is considered a Heavy-Work position, and employee must exert between 50 – 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 – 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 – 20 pounds of force to constantly move objects. Employee must possess the ability to move heavier weights as needed with assistance and/or the proper equipment.

Work Environment

Position involves working in office, maintenance garage, and outdoor settings, including in tight spaces and on rooftops. Noise levels are moderate to loud and may require hearing protection. Employee will work in controlled temperature settings, hot or cold temperatures, or in inclement weather. Employee will be subject to air and noise pollutants, chemicals, bodily fluids, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. There are frequent interruptions to workflow and an expectation to attend meetings on a regular basis.

  • Work shifts could be extended or changed during snow or weather events that could impact operations.
  • Employee is subject to On Call hours due to weather events.
  • All MTD employees are trained on the Management System Policy and the impacts associated with this position.

Beginning Wage: $18.55 - $21.41/hour, depending on experience (This will increase to $20.78 - 23.74, as of July 1st)
