Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Investment Officer position. The Investment Officer is a full-time, year-round position, located in our Boston, MA office. Given Amherst’s distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The Investment Officer will be a key member of a small, generalist investment team that leads all aspects of the Amherst College Long-Term Investment Pool, comprising the College and Folger Shakespeare Memorial Library endowments valued at approximately $4 billion. This person will report to the Chief Investment Officer, and is encouraged to collaborate across the team, including mentoring a diverse group of summer interns from the College. They are expected to develop strong working relationships with existing investment managers, source new prospective partners, conduct diligence on these partners, and help select new investments for the portfolio. They are also encouraged to take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College’s efforts to build a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Success in this role is determined by the Investment Officer’s contribution to the team’s process of selecting, accessing, and developing relationships with extraordinary investment partners, and by the performance of the Long-Term Investment Pool.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Investment Officer is responsible for sourcing, conducting due diligence, selecting, and the ongoing monitoring and relationship development related to both existing and prospective investment managers in a variety of asset classes. This is a generalist team structure, and manager relationships can include those in private and public equity, venture capital, absolute return/hedge fund strategies, credit, renewables, and real estate. The portfolio strategy is relationship-driven and bottom-up. As such, successful candidates will demonstrate a strong curiosity about a wide variety of investments, and in making comparisons across diverse opportunities. The portfolio is concentrated and has low turnover. As such, successful candidates will demonstrate a strong interest in spending time on the current portfolio, and will exhibit a long-term mentality.

The Investment Officer is responsible for assisting in the preparation of materials for the Amherst College Investment Committee, Board of Trustees, Alumni meetings and other high-level audiences on a variety of topics.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the Investment Officer will be a mentor to the less experienced members of the team and summer interns, requiring attention to building and nurturing an intentionally inclusive culture.

Other projects and responsibilities may be assigned from time to time.

The Investment Officer must be willing and able to travel to meet with both existing and prospective investment managers (travel is expected to be ~35-40%).
Qualifications
Required:

Bachelor’s degree
-
5-10 years of related investment experience, with compensation dependent on experience level and contributions to the team.

Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities

Passionate / mission- oriented, with a long-term focus on the College’s success

Must be enthusiastic, hardworking, self-motivated, and able to work both independently and as part of a team

- MBA, CFA and/or CAIA designations
