Position Title: Melting Metallurgist
Functional Reporting to: Plant Manager
Administrative Reporting to: QC Manager
Purpose
The Melting Metallurgist will ensure that the Tempe Melting & Pouring Department is operating to meet the demands of production and effect positive change in the melt shop to lower costs. This is accomplished through the direct oversight and management of this department. The Melting Metallurgist will manage all hourly employees and their activities through directives to floor supervision. This includes maintaining or achieving all of the following objectives: 1—Ensuring that all safety procedures, operating procedures, and work instructions are followed. 2— Maintaining production levels as required from daily production schedules 3—Aligning the staffing of the department to meet production demands from said schedule. 4—Coordinating maintenance and repairs to equipment through the Maintenance Department.
Principal Accountabilities
- Manage all staffing in the department. This includes control of salaried shift supervision, tower operators and the hourly floor production staff.
- Drive initiatives routinely throughout the department to reduce costs and lower melting delays.
- Ensure least cost charging practices are met and returns charging levels are maintained.
- Conduct project work and development to create best practice methods for lowering man-hours in the Melt & Pour Department. This includes implementation of new equipment and methods.
- Follow and enact ISO system standards regarding work instructions and work with Process Control to develop best practice work instructions. This includes interviews with Process Control during process audits of the department.
- Assistance in the supervision of and/or direct supervision of production workers as required.
- Direct activities and daily duties of Tower Operators in the melt shop.
- Additional duties and responsibilities not yet defined to assure the safe and efficient operation of the melting shop and all equipment necessary for this purpose.
The successful candidate will have a 4 year Engineering degree in Metallurgical or Materials Science with a minimum of 3-5 years experience in an industrial production atmosphere. The candidate should be familiar with Quality Control Standards and ISO Systems. Additionally, the candidate must have excellent oral and written communication and group presentation skills. The successful candidate must be capable of communicating to and interacting with all levels of personnel including the production worker in a union atmosphere or the Plant Manager in an executive setting. Ideally, the incumbent will have the ability to create, contribute and accept ideas for change in procedures and processes necessary to operate this department in a safe, efficient and effective manner.
