  • A Mentor is a Driver of Zero Harm, New Hire Onboarding
    • “Right People, Right Place, Right Time”
    • Conduct weekly CAP reviews (12 weeks) as well as 30-60-90 day follow up reviews
      • Pinpoint specific safety behaviors we want employees to display
      • Measure the behaviors through follow-up to ensure it happens
      • Provide specific feedback to employees so they know how they are progressing
      • Reinforce the behaviors we want employees to display
    • Model the safety behaviors we are driving with Zero Harm to ensure successful cultural integration

  • A Mentor Observes, Engages, and Reinforces
    • Provide both positive feedback and constructive feedback in order to enable a person to adjust a behavior
    • Effective feedback is gauged by the performer altering their behavior in one of three ways:
      • Continue doing what is working or adding value;
      • Stop doing what is blocking achievement or is ineffective; or
      • Start doing those things that will increase achievement for effectiveness
    • Reinforcement – strengthening of behaviors by following it with positive or negative reinforcers
      • Create a “want-to-do” environment by positively reinforcing the behaviors you want to see occur again
      • Make sure reinforcement is done when person is performing the behavior


  • A Mentor Provides Timely and Effective Feedback
    • Meets with supervisor to provide feedback
    • Meets with other department mentors once per month to discuss:
      • General feedback
      • Challenges
      • Opportunities (implementation of a best practice, training ideas, etc.)
      • Feedback to management on how we can improve the program
