Senior Counsel, Employment Law at our location in Gastonia, NC

Reporting to Vice President of Human Resources, Americas and based in Gastonia, NC, this key on-site position requires considerable independence and discretion applying legal and business judgement and a hands-on, pragmatic approach to problem-solving. This position provides legal support and guidance to internal clients for a global filter manufacturing company and is responsible for handling a broad range of labor and employment relations, regulatory matters, litigation support, and corporate compliance.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide practical risk-based legal advice to Human Resources on a broad range of employment matters, including recruiting, hiring, leave and benefits, employee relations, performance management, discipline, terminations, working hours/hours of work, contingent workforce/leasing, anti-discrimination, diversity efforts, and redundancies
  • Proactively create and update policies, guidelines, employment agreements, separation and settlement agreements, and other employment-related documents
  • Support the continuous improvement of Human Resources related processes to maximize efficiencies, while providing adequate safeguards
  • Work with compliance, internal audit, and other functional areas
  • Develop improved processes for efficiently handling legal matters and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Create and deliver training for HR and management on employment law issues
  • Keep up to date on changes to applicable laws and best practices for employment law
  • Partner with and manage outside counsel as necessary in a cost-effective manner

REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

J.D. degree from an accredited US law school and licensed to practice in at least one state

Experience:

  • 6+ years of employment law experience in law firm and/or in-house legal department
  • Significant experience working on employment law issues in the US; also experience working on matters that cover multiple countries within the Americas

  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Superior legal and analytical skills – exceptional judgment and creativity, with the ability to think strategically, weigh the legal and business objectives and give practical advice
  • Commitment to the highest level of ethics, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Highly responsive and service-oriented attitude; ability to interact with business leaders and Human Resources professionals independently and effectively at all levels, and in many different countries
  • Ability to quickly understand business objectives of an agreement, identify related issues, and facilitate a risk/benefit analysis
  • Proven ability to handle complex matters that require discretion, judgment, and prioritization, often with short deadlines
  • Ability to consider different perspectives and to think broadly, beyond the law, when making decisions and recommending courses of action
  • Ability to think “outside the box” and address complex matters with risk-based practical approach and creative solutions

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $170,000.00 - $190,000.00 per year
