The Human Services Department provides a comprehensive array of services to help people meet emergency, short-and long-term needs; and help every individual reach their highest level of self-sufficiency. These positions have considerable contact with diverse low-income groups, other agencies, anti-poverty workers, and the general public.

The Human Services Department is seeking to hire Senior Center Assistants to assist with managing the daily operations of City of Phoenix senior centers. The primary role of the Senior Center Assistant is to develop and implement a variety of social and recreational programs and activities for seniors and/or disabled adults. Responsibilities require considerable contact with members of senior, disabled, minority, and poverty groups.

Additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with meals and supplemental food programs.
  • Training and supervising center volunteers.
  • Handling cash and daily deposits.
  • Preparing reports.
  • Providing positive customer service with internal and external customers.
  • Ensuring that all city, county, state, and federal regulations are adhered to.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Possess strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Office functions in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Cash handling skills.

SALARY


$15.19 (minimum) - $21.94 (maximum) hourly / $31,595.20 - $45,635.20 annually. Candidates may be hired up to $45,635.20 depending upon qualifications.

The City of Phoenix is currently undergoing a classification and compensation study, moving one step closer to our goal of becoming a market leader and Arizona’s premier public sector employer. Salary range adjustments from the study will take effect, pending final approval from the City Council, on August 7, 2023.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience working with the public in the direct provision of social services, supplemented by some college coursework in social work, sociology, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 20 pounds may be required.

  • Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate’s suitability for the job.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Two years of professional experience working with older adults and/or disabled individuals in the direct provision of social services.
  • Experience effectively communicating with the public in person and in writing.
  • Experience supervising volunteers.
  • Experience providing quality customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Food handling experience and/or a current Maricopa County Food Service Worker card is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate in Chinese or Spanish is desirable.
